Dan Garrett Lecture

PNP Dan Garrett will give a lecture at the May meeting.  The lecture is free to any paid-up member of SAM21 or SYM6.  All others will be charged $10 in unmarked bills.  Those wishing to join us for dinner are encouraged to do so, starting at 6:00 PM.  The meeting starts at 7:30 PM on May 9th. We plan to start the lecture itself at 7:45 PM.  Don’t miss this!

Minutes of April Meeting

11 April 2005  7:37 PM
Sec’y’s report: accepted as printed.
Treas’ report: balance reported.
G&W:  Jim Sisti will be appearing April 14 at the Manchester Senior Center on Middle Turnpike.
Dick Matt will be performing this month at the Hartford Atheneum.
We welcome Walt Umberfield back from recovering from hip replacement surgery.
Old Business:  Dan Garrett is definitely booked for May.  We’re going to charge $10 to anyone who isn’t a paid-up member of 21 (or Y-6).
The Deaf Magicians will be at the American School for the Deaf on Friday May 13 and at the CT Expo Center on the 14th.  Ron Strong will get more info tomorrow.
New Business:  It was moved and passed that the club take a business-card-sized ad in the National Convention program book in honor of "local boy" Richard Dooley becoming MI in Boston.
We received a notice encouraging the various assemblies to have a "pin" made to sell and trade [at conventions and other sites].  After some discussion, the members declined such a project.

Dan Sclare got some items from "Whimsical Alley" that sells Harry Potter-related merchandise such as a wand, and a fancy pen.
Richard Dooley has suggested that the three local assemblies (17, 21, and 127) combine to host the National Council meeting in November.  We will try to find more information before committing ourselves.
Adjourned: 8:10 PM

Aftermeeting: Food magic, in honor of our new restaurant meeting place.

Dana Ring tried to vanish a quarter under a peppermill under a napkin, but the peppermill vanished instead.
Dan Sclare reached into a nearby hard roll and pulled out a rainbow streamer.  Dan also produced a large Hershey kiss from his bare hands, but that was too large to share, so he dropped it into a mesh bag which thereupon changed into a handful of normal kisses.  Lastly, he tried to make popcorn for us all--in a large pan--with lighter fluid.  Usually, he has a large live bunny in his pan load, but for tonight he used Rocky the Raccoon.
Dave Edwards produced a trio of knots in each of a pair of ropes.
Walt Umberfield showed us a trick he developed called "Through the Tunnel" involving four nine-of-clubs that turn over one at a time.  He then placed three "predictions" on the table.  Dan selected a card and placed it on the three.  The packet of four turned out to be all the same denomination.  Lastly, Walt went through the deck and took out a single prediction.  The pack was spread into three piles--the top of each pile matched the denomination of the prediction.  He finished with a set of flourishes.
We all then took turns teaching our guest Angelo (the owner of the restaurant) some card tricks.
